What are Knots?

We all have them. Knots. But what are they?

Knots are the result of muscle fibers sticking together. Our bodies are meant to move, stretch and work. When we are stationary for long periods of time, working at a desk for 8 hours a day for example, when we are chronically dehydrated or malnourished or if we find ourselves using repetitive motions, our bodies develop knots. Poor posture and chronic stress can also lead to knots throughout our bodies.

So, what can we do about knots? There are several steps you can take. Drink plenty of water, stretch regularly, get up and move and eating a healthy diet are some great ways to prevent knots in the first place.

You can also get a massage. Massage helps in several ways:

It relaxes the muscles and fascia, allowing the knots to release

It oxygenates the blood, allowing injuries that may cause knots to heal more quickly

It lowers cortisol in the body, the hormone released when you feel stress

It helps keep your body flexible and healthy

Massage has many benefits for health and wellness. Alleviating knots is just one of the many ways it can improve your quality of life.
